A day before this, my fellow trainees and I were at the Science Centre and we gazed at the stars in a dome-shaped tent which had the stars projected onto the dome. The guide took us through Orion to the Big Dipper, Canis major and Canis minor and we all gazed in wonder at the constellations. I could have just stared into “space” for another hour and at some point, I said these words to my friend, “You know, I’d really like my children to gaze at the stars in wonderment than to look into a microscope in confusion”.

My parents used to take me to the beach when I was young. I remember my elder sister and I swimming and going from rock pool to rock pool. We really lost track of time. Pasir Ris is one of the better beaches for scrutinising dead corals and seashells.
